Friday afternoon, I tuned in with millions worldwide to watch the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Paris Olympics. I thoroughly enjoyed the organizer’s decision to send the parade of athletes down the Seine in boats. For many athletes, the Olympic games represent a pinnacle of their life’s focused achievement. Even as the rain poured in Paris on Friday, a look of joy and fulfillment filled the smiles and faces of many teams and individuals as we watched them move down the river.

The entertainment was fine—at first. I wondered how they could organize the sound and spectacle over such a vast space. The dances, Lady Gaga, and the weird pre-recorded videos weren’t my type of thing, but I could abide with most of it. Then, the show took a decidedly “French” turn.
