Each year, Gallup tracks American trust in its institutions. That trust has declined significantly over the last two decades, but in 2022, it took a nosedive, continuing that trend into 2023. This is a nonpartisan reality, by the way. The one thing Americans, Democrats and Republicans, agree on is that we don’t trust the world we live in anymore. From the president to the media, labor unions to churches, and doctors to banks, trust in our institutions is at an all-time low.

Into that vacuum comes the need to make sense of the world. If the pattern we once relied upon is no longer trustworthy, something within the very soul of a human being requires that we construct our own pattern. Hence the rise of conspiracy theories. Our brains and our need for predictable stability create new realities. All we need is a few others to agree with us until we recognize the truth that no one else has understood. Thankfully, social media facilitates such toxic validations. Never mind that such alternate realities are usually built upon the shallowest foundations.
