Reading Time: 2 minutes

When the guns of World War I finally fell silent in November 1918, the world celebrated. After four years of unimaginable destruction, the bloodiest conflict in human history to that point had finally ended. Millions were dead, ancient empires had collapsed, and an entire generation had been scarred by the horrors of industrialized warfare. Yet amid the devastation, there was hope that something extraordinary might emerge from the ashes.

At the center of that hope stood American President Woodrow Wilson.

Wilson had promised that America’s entry into the war would accomplish something greater than military victory. He envisioned a new international order built upon democracy, justice, national self-determination, and lasting peace. For millions of exhausted Europeans, the American president appeared to offer a pathway toward a better world.

But the distance between noble ideals and political realities would prove enormous.

In this episode of The Empire: A 250-Year American Story, we explore the profound trauma that followed World War I and the contradictions that emerged as America assumed its place among the world’s great powers.

While American leaders proclaimed the virtues of democracy and freedom abroad, troubling developments at home exposed the fragility of those same principles. Political repression, racial violence, revolutionary fears, and growing cultural disillusionment revealed a nation struggling to reconcile its ideals with its actions.

Meanwhile, across Europe, the psychological wounds of war were transforming societies, undermining traditional institutions, and challenging the very idea of human progress.

This is the story of a world that survived an unprecedented catastrophe but could not escape its consequences. It is also the story of America’s first great encounter with global leadership—and the difficult questions that encounter raised about power, morality, and the promises nations make.

The war had ended. The trauma was only beginning.
