The nature of democracy is that no matter how much we despise the system and its candidates, they are ultimately a reflection of “we the people.” This is the system and the democracy that we deserve because this is the system that we created.

Six months before Donald Trump’s victory in 2016, I predicted he would be the next President of the United States, not because of his policies, vision, or leadership but because this is the candidate America deserved. Rather than demanding substance, we revel in soundbites. Rather than principled vision and leadership, we are seduced by fear and anger. Rather than expecting the best our society has to offer, we have submitted to a hypothesis of the “lesser of two evils” when voting for our leaders.

It has all played out, and this is the fruit of American democracy, a harvest of idiocy and corruption. We asked for it, and we got it.
