As a person who places his faith in front of his politics, I do not see how one can fail to see the hand of God in preserving Donald Trump’s life this past Saturday. But perhaps that salvation is not for the ends many of his supporters believe it to be. Perhaps God, as I have said in the past, is preserving Donald Trump, just like he did the ancient Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, not to make America great again but to bring judgment.
The most dangerous political leader and faction is not one that is threatened or weakened but one that believes it possesses a mandate from heaven to enact its political will. For Donald Trump and his supporters, that is what the failed assassination proved. God is for them, so whoever is against them is against God. Never mind the purposes of God that go beyond Trump and America. Never mind that God does not take the sides of any man because He is focused only on His own ways and purposes. And never mind that, as the prophet Isaiah expressed, God’s ways are not our ways.
